Field Trip #10

Every trip gets better and better. Every visit I get more comfortable and more interactive. I saw the same things that I see every week but it doesn't get boring. I am beginning to become familiar with patients now and see their progress. I am also more verbal and I try to help as much as possible. I really do enjoy going to my sponsor every week. I like the people there especially Dr. Wetzler and the most recent student he had. She was so nice to me and talked to me the whole time. She not only talked about medical stuff but also about her life. It made me realize that doctors have lives too just like teachers. when I see teachers outside of school I am always shocked but then I say to myself, "Teachers are real people with real lives too." She told me about so many useful things that will help me through college and medical school. Aside from that, I told Dr. Wetzler about the bone fun facts for my project and he sounded pretty excited about it. Like always I cannot wait for the next visit.

Connection #10

Blood drive

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. But only 5% of people in the U.S that are eligible to donate blood truly do. Healthy blood donors are the only source of blood, and currently there are no other substitutes. Lindenwold High School hosts the annual blood drives in our gymnasium. Our school is trying to donate as mush as 130 pints every blood drive. For those who are not eligible to donate can volunteer to help out with reception, refreshments, pass delivery, roll call and they even come to sit with the donors while the donation is in process.

Before the donation occurs the Red Cross checks if the person is at least 16 years of age with parental consent, weigh a certain amount, and all medical history is up to date and that is safe to donate. After that, the donor is ready to give blood. The donors lay on the beds while the blood is being taken and then after, they receive refreshments and chat with friends and family.

In order to lose weight you needed to apply three fundamental principles. They include;
1. Going on diet which focuses on eating healthy food If your diet focuses on eating healthy foods your body will not go into starvation mode as is the case with going on conventional diets. The major mistake that most people make with regards to losing weight is going on a diet which focuses on reducing calories drastically instead of a diet which focuses on eating healthy foods. You need to eat a healthy diet and at the same time keep watch of your calories. You should however ensure that you do not reduce your calories very much because this could make your body go into starvation mode.
2. Perform aerobic exercises The best time to do aerobic exercises is just before you eat anything very early in the morning. Each aerobic workout session should last for more than twenty minutes or else it will not be effective. Cardiovascular exercises help increase a person's metabolism and therefore they are able to burn more calories.
3. Weight train Many people are of the habit of ignoring weight training exercises thinking that they are not as effective as aerobic exercises. The truth is with proper weight training you can manage to burn a lot of calories.

"The highest courage is to dare to appear to be what one is." John Lancaster Spalding

This quote is the motivational quote of the day. In my opinion this quotes means that it takes strong will-power to be who you are and show people the real you. For example, some people change to fit in with the "in crowd" and forget about the real person deep down. A strong, high courageous person will not be afraid to be himself in front of anyone. This is a good quality to have but also the hardest because everyone wants to fit in.

This week was extremely successful. I talked to my sponsor about my visual project. He told me to do some research on a surgery and let him know which one I would like to learn. I also mentioned my project date to him as well but I don't think he checked his availibility. This week, I interacted with patients and talked to everyone. I was very interactive and I got to spend te full time there this time. Since I don't play softball anymore I am getting a lot accomplished. I have been focusing on my sponsor and not having to leave early; and I even go straight A's for the third marking period.

Fish Oil and Heart Disease

For a long time, European doctors have been dispensing purified fish oil, or omega 3 fatty acids, to patients who have suffered a heart attack. Studies have shown that fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids improve survival rates and reduce fatal heart rhythms. "The U.S. has recognized the benefits of fish oil, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been slow to approve fish oil for use in heart attack patients; the drugs were approved to treat high triglycerides, but not specifically for the treatment of heart attack patients. Instead, many Americans are given more expensive and sometimes invasive treatments, which may range from pills that lower cholesterol to implantable defibrillators that can restart the heart." For a while, many in the medical community worried that because fish oil is seen as a “natural supplement” in the U.S., doctors would ignore the fact that it is also very powerful medicine. But these days, many doctors do prescribe drugs, brand names of the omega-3’s, to their patients. The fish oil can help lower triglycerides (blood fat) and boost “good” cholesterol (HDL), which means patients can increase their chances of survival and hopefully avoid a second heart attack.

Today in Spanish class we were listening to a spanish song and it really caught my ear. The song was called " Gracias A Ti" by Wisin and Yandel. The beat was soothing and the words were touching. The song was in complete spanish but even when you translate the song it is still pleasing. Most of the time when people try to translate from another language it does not sound as good as the original and it loses its meaning. In my opinion, the chorus was the best part.
gracias a ti
hoy soy feliz
cuando llegaste
aprendí a vivir
y es que gracias a ti
hoy puedo ser feliz
cuando llegaste
aprendí a vivir
which is translated into:
thanks to you
today I am happy
When you arrived
I learned how to live
and its just that thanks to you
today I can be happy
when I arrived
I learned how to live

Disney

Senior trip was so much fun, words cannot describe. We went swimming, went on rides, shopped, took pictures, hung out and walked. Boy did we walk, alot! The trip contained mostly walking.

Regular brisk walking is one of the most simple, most effective ways to exercise. Not only does it strengthen your bones, but walking also reduces body fat, improves your mood and energy levels, and reduces the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Walking Tips
Always check with your physician before beginning an exercise program.
Even if it is cold outside, don’t overdress. If you are not sure how much to wear, dress in layers so you can take of clothing as you get hot.

Stretch for five minutes before and after your walk to help avoid injury.

Wear walking or running shoes and athletic socks.
Start slowly to give your muscles a chance to warm up. Walk slower than your brisk pace for about five minutes, then speed up.
Don’t try too much too soon. If you’ve never exercised before, five or 10 minutes may be enough for the first few sessions. Gradually work up to 30 to 40 minutes per session.
Walk at a brisk pace. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to talk to a walking partner, but not sing.
Take frequent water breaks. Try to drink water about every 20 minutes. Also, drink plenty of water when you’re done.
Once you get started, stay motivated by making walking dates with friends. Keep a log of your progress to chart your improvement.

Walking Form
Swing your arms opposite to your feet.
Keep your arms bent at right angles or lose. Don’t over swing your arms or you may begin twisting your spine.
Stand straight with only a slight lean forward. Avoid bending your spine.
Don’t overstride, which can cause injuries, aches, and pains. Take natural steps. To go faster, just step more quickly instead of taking longer steps.
Land on your heel and push off using the balls of your feet.

Field Trip #7

I really do not know what else to say. My field trip blogs are beginning to repeat themselves a lot. I see and do the same things every week. (And yes Mr. Abrams he does have a daughter named Carly). But pretty much that is all I learned recently. I have seen more injections, another knee draining and a lot of x-rays. Lastly, there is another new medical student that is shadowing Dr. Wetzler. Since I have been there this is the 5Th student, but this time it is a girl. I like her a lot. She talks to me and explains things to me. She is really cool and extremely friendly and I enjoy working with her.

HAHA! My mom's foot finally was back to normal when she hurt it again. She was back to her ever day rutines and back to being active. She twisted her ankle and now her foot is hurt again, and she is limping around.

2in1 deal
Karma stinks! Now my ankle hurts extremely, extremely bad. I plan on making an appointment with Dr. Wetzler so he can check it out and see what is going on. This is the ankle I have broken 3 times already and from running in softball it is beginning to give me some trouble.
