Ankle sprains are the most common sports injuries. These injuries occur more frequently than one would think. Ankle sprains result from the force around the ankle that exceeds the limits of the supportive ligaments of the ankle but is less than that which would break the ankle bones. Most sprained ankles are self-treated and do not need to be taken care of by a doctor, therefore, most injuries are not documented. "Sprained ankles have been estimated to constitute approximately 15% of all sports-related injuries. More than 23,000 people per day, including athletes and nonathletes, require medical care for ankle sprains in the United States."
I sprained my left ankle badly about 17 years ago and never bothered to get it looked at. I swear it bothers me just a bit to this day. I should have gone to the hospital.
