Humans and animals come hand in hand. Humans do in fact differ from animals in a way you probably not normally think of. Humans have muscles in our faces which allow us to create facial expressions to show how we are feeling, for example: happy, sad, confused, scared, angry, and excited. Facial expressions are way of telling others how we are feeling; for instance, the smile. Some scientists think the origin of the smile goes way back to when humans were more primitive, when parting the lips into a smile and showing your teeth was a way of telling someone else “Don't worry, I'm not going to bite you”! An interesting thing about the smile is that scientists have discovered that it is linked to the special chemicals in our brains which make us feel happy. This means that if you are feeling sad, smiling can actually help to make you feel better.

Connection #6
My clumsy mother fell down the steps and broke her ankle/foot. She does not like going to the hospital or to the doctor so she called Dr. Kristin for help. I went home and found my mother sitting there, broken foot and all watching TV. I checked out her foot and there was some swollen and some bruises. There was definitely something wrong I do not have an x-ray machine at my house so I diagnosed her as cripple. I made her ice it on and off and evaluate it. I also wrapped it for her and adjusted crutches for her. Every night I make her do these exercises to get her back on her feet so she can stop complaining.

Connection #5
My friend Tyler has bad knees. Often his knees pop out of place and need pop back in. Also his knees fill up with fluid and they need to be drained as well. This connects to the guy I met yesterday who had to get his knee drained. While the older man was getting it done I imagined Tyler getting this done and the pain that comes with it.
Field Trip #5
This week was just as good as the others. The time was limited because I had a softball scrimmage but I still stayed for about an hour and a half. I met a new intern guy, he is pretty cool and easier to talk to than Justin. I also met a creeper guy too. He was a patient who seemed very interested in talking to me and shaking my hand. But aside from that I also say some nasty things. I saw a man get his knee drained. It was so nasty, it was yellow and nasty and there was about two big syringes full. Eww gross! That was the highlight of my day. All the other patients were there for check-ups and wrapping changes.

My choice #5
my cell phone and my ipod.
My cell phone is glued to my side. This is my number one essential. I do not going anywhere, I repeat, anywhere without my cell phone. Without my phone I would be lost. I use it all day, everyday; morning, noon, and night. My phone is more like an obsession. I even bring it in the bathroom when i get a shower. My phone enables me to talk to my friends, text, Internet access, games, pictures, and music.
My ipod is just like my cell phone, it never leaves my side. I love being able to just listen to music whenever I like. My ipod has music, games, Internet, and pictures as well. My ipod keeps my schedule, my softball games, and just random notes that I may need.
I know that this is pretty sad that I could not live without my cell phone and my ipod but it's true. When I leave my ipod at home or when my phone dies my day is blah.

Connection #4
Working with Dr. Wetzler, I have noticed his interaction with children. It brings a smile to his face and an even bigger smile to the faces of children. This made me realize that whatever part of the medical field I pursue I want to be "pediatric." I love working with children. And even more I love seeing the smile on a child's face when they are being helped. children are just so interesting to me and I would love to pursue a pediatric medicine.

This is another quote from thinkexist.com that caught my eye. I love quotes and I enjoy reading all different quotes on my free time. The ones that really stick out to me I copy and paste into a word document on my computer at home or I write them in my book. In my opinion quotes are something to live by and sometimes they even give inspiration. This quote is 100% true in my life as all the other quotes I have copied. In my opinion this quotes means, your family or friends don't care what you have to say, they respect your opinion and what you have to say. The others who mind what you say, don't really matter because they don't take the time to understand you and understand why you say that things you say.

I can't wait for next week so I can go see my sponsor!
Connection #3
"Joint and Spinal Problems
Obesity accelerates the wear on the joints and spine. In
particular, osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis) of the knees is
increased. Obese people have difficulty squatting (getting on
and off the toilet, getting out of a car), running and climbing stairs.
Biomechanically this is explained because the force on one’s
knees between the patella (kneecap) and its articulation with
the rest of the knee is about three times your body weight with
walking. When these other activities are undertaken, the forces
can reach six to 10 times body weight. That is, the force on a 200-
pound person’s knees while walking is 600 pounds, and when
they are climbing, running, squatting, etc. the force approaches
1200-2000 pounds. Multiply that by the number of years people
are overweight and you get excessive wear and thus arthritis.
The corollary is true as well, and this provides a nice
incentive to lose weight. The bang for the buck for the knees is 3-
10 pounds of wear reduction for every pound lost! Simply losing
10-20 pounds can make a real difference in one’s activity level.
Moderate exercise and leg-strengthening exercises can reduce
the effective joint forces as well.
Obesity also affects spinal mechanics. Truncal obesity with
a panniculus (doctor-speak for a big gut) causes an anterior
bending force and a compressive force on the spinal column,
thus leading to disc pathology and back pain. Imagine wearing
a backpack backwards with 50-75 pounds in it for a day and you
get the idea."

My Choice #3
One day I was just reading through quotes on thinkexist.com and I came across this quote. This quote caught my eyes from a mile away. I used to love Winnie the Pooh when I was younger so as soon as I saw Christopher Robin I had to read it. This quote is 100% true. You are always braver than you believe, there is always and unknown strength deep down which is unnoticed, and you are always smarter than you give yourself credit for.
Field Trip #3
I also noticed how many people have knee problems. I know Dr. Wetzler specializes in knees and shoulders but (omg) I see so many people with knee reconstruction surgery or some sort of knee surgery.
Another procedure I see often are injections. Dr. Wetzler injects a cartilage serum into the knee and other joints about 5 times at least when I am there.
Lastly, Dr. Wetzler have a new understudy/student and I am not too fond of him. He is weird and very clingy in my opinion. He is not like the other two students Dr. Wetzler had. The other two explained everything to me without me having to ask. With this new man, Justin, I have to ask what is going on and he still does not really tell me.
Evreything Thursday when I leave there I cannot wait until the next visit because it is always so interesting.
Another thing I noticed (not important) is that a lot of people have the name James and Jim. When I was there Thursday there were 6 people with the name James or Jim. I thought it was interesting.
